What You'll Need to Make a Ginger Turmeric Shot
Here's a quick look at the main ingredients you need for this ginger lemon shot recipe. Be sure to check the recipe card further down the page for the full list and quantities of each.
- Citrus: These little shots of ginger juice are made with orange and lemon. Both contain vitamin C which is important for healing the body which is why it's often recommended as a supplement when you're sick with a cold or the flu.
- Ginger: It's essential to use fresh ginger when making these homemade ginger shots. It has the best flavor but also more health benefits than using dried powder.
- Turmeric: You also want to use fresh turmeric if you can find it. It's often available in large grocery stores. Look for it close to the ginger and garlic.
- Cayenne pepper: Adds just bit of spice but also brings it's own health benefits to this turmeric shot.
- Liquid: Your shots need liquid added to get the right consistency. You can use regular water or coconut water.
Substitutions and Variations
There's lots of flexibility in this ginger shot recipe. Here are a few recommendations:
- Add Some Black Pepper: The piperine in black pepper helps the body more easily absorb the antioxidant benefits of the turmeric.
- Want a Bit of Sweetness: You can add a fruit such as pineapple or mango which bring their own health benefits along with making your ginger shot a bit sweeter. You can also use your favorite vegan liquid sweetener such as maple syrup as well.
- Swap the Fresh Lemon Juice: You can also use lime juice instead.
- Liquid: Instead of coconut water or regular water you can also use pineapple or orange juice as well. I suggest choosing an option that doesn't have any additional sugar added to it. It will provide a bit of natural sweetness for a sweeter ginger shot.

You can store them in the freezer for up three months. An ice cube tray is perfect for storing them in small amounts. Thaw them out in the fridge overnight.

Frequently Asked Questions
The flavor of ginger is quite intense and may cause heartburn or even an upset stomach in some people. It's best to start small and see how your stomach handles them before drinking them regularly. If you have any health concerns or taking medication you should talk to your doctor before adding them to your diet.
You can enjoy them any time though they may work better on an empty stomach as your body can more quickly absorb the nutrients.
For the ginger you should really use fresh ginger root. It tastes better, has more potency, and is readily available. Turmeric may be more difficult to find fresh in the grocery store, and in a pinch you can use powdered. I suggest starting with one teaspoon of turmeric and then you can add more to achieve the preferred flavor.
They have an intense spicy kick. Ginger is naturally spicy while the turmeric brings a bit of earthiness and warmth, and the lemon juice a bit of tang. If it's too intense you can always dilute it even more or even add more orange juice to sweeten it.
