For the longest time, I didn't eat French toast at all, because I didn't even think about the fact that a vegan version could be made. I had definitely been missing out! I experimented with a few different versions of French toast, and finally settled on this one that I absolutely love. In the end, I pretty much substituted the original ingredients of classic French toast for their vegan counterparts, and the recipe ended up tasting amazing! Here is how I make my favorite vegan French toast recipe.

    vegan french toast

What you will need for this vegan French toast

The classic French toast recipe requires milk and eggs, so for this version, I just replaced those with dairy free milk and a flax egg. Check out the exact ratios that I used below.

    • 1 cup dairy free milk
    • 1 tablespoon ground flax
    • 1 tablespoon corn starch
    • ½ tablespoon coconut sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
    • dash of salt
    • about 6 slices of bread

I also chose to make this version gluten free and used gluten free bread. The recipe itself is gluten free, so if you have a gluten allergy or sensitivity, feel free to use this same recipe and use gluten free bread. If you don't have an allergy, of course feel free to use whatever bread you would like!

How to make your vegan French toast

    • To a large bowl, add the milk, flax, corn starch, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt. Mix it well and let it sit for a few minutes.
    • Next, slice your bread and dip each loaf of bread into the mixture. Make sure it is fully covered. I let mine soak for ten seconds on each side.
    • Grease your pan with coconut oil and cook each piece of French toast for 2-3 minutes on each side. This recipe makes for about 6 slices of toast.
    • Once your French has been cooked, top it with maple syrup, powdered sugar, and fresh berries, or whatever toppings you prefer.

Check out the video below to see the full process in action.
